Education Highlight

As part of our annual education requirements, Harbour View Haven offers training to all staff

members and volunteers on the importance of the Persons for Protection in Care Act (PPCA). Staff  took part in training at the end of 2023.

What is this Act for?

The PPCA came into force on October 1, 2007. It is used as a safeguard for residents who are

receiving care in any Nova Scotia hospital, residential care facility, long-term care facility,

homes for the aged or (dis)Alibied persons under the Home for Special Care Act, or group

homes/residential centres under the Children and Family Services Act.

Under this Act abuse is clearly defined in addition to our re- sponsibility to report concerns.

Abuse is not always physical, it can be psychological, emotional, sexual, a form of neglect, theft of a resident’s belongings or medical abuse which could include withholding essential treatment.  The Act also requires all health facility administrators and service providers (including staff and volunteers) to promptly report all allegations or instances of abuse.

Anyone may report suspected abuse under this Act by calling:

1-800-225-7225.
