Eating Together!
As a society, we are getting busier and busier! Families are finding it hard to make time to eat meals together. But sharing meal time is extremely important! Check out some facts below that help to remind us why eating as a family is important:.
- Children who eat with their family have more nutritious diets, do better in school and have a lower risk of being obese or eating disorders.
- Teens who eat with their family also do better in school, have a lower risk of smoking and are less likely to use drugs/alcohol.
- Adults who eat with family tend to eat more vegetables, drink less sugary beverages and eat less fast food meals.
- Older adults who eat in a group also tend to have better nutrition and lower rates of malnutrition.
- People who eat in groups in their community tend to learn to cook, share meals, try new food items and learn more about nutrition.
- Eating as a family will help with developing your family’s food skills, creating a healthy environment in relation to food, supporting your children’s interest in healthy eating and developing your children’s eating habits.
Some tips to make shared meal times even better:
- Have a no screens policy at your table! There is not much point in eating together if you’re all staring at screens ignoring each other – the benefits will not be the same!
- Give everyone a chance to speak and add to the conversation.
- Ask questions that are open-ended, not “yes” or “no” answers.
- Don’t use meal time as a chance to scold picky eaters. Try to keep things light and enjoyable.
Hilltop Highlights and Events

Our annual Painted Lady Butterfly project will commence again this spring. We anticipate receiving our Painted Lady caterpillars during the last week of May. We will watch their transition from caterpillars to butterflies, and then release them into the garden park in early June. Stay tuned for details!
